Cootehall School Playground
Cootehall National school is a medium sized country primary school located in Co. Roscommon , close to the Shannon waterway system. This playground was designed so that it not only acted as a school playground but could be used by the wider rural community The playground itself is a two zone playground: the junior zone part of the playground ( to the left, in the photo ), incorporates a play tower with slide, a seesaw and several spring activities. The senior playground has been designed as an obstacle / fitness course. The course begins with a double balance beam, then progresses to a large “A” frame scramble net. Next is a 5m wide traverse climbing wall, which takes considerable strength, coordination and flexibility to navigate. Overhead monkeybars are next, followed by chin up bars of various heights and finally a specific area for exercises such as press ups, sit ups etc.

In order to reduce the overall cost of the project, members of the local community were involved in the physical installation of the playground equipment under the guidance of a Playgrounds Direct installation engineer. A local farmer gave his time and use of his machinery, a local builder gave his time, tools and expertise, other volunteers helped lay the rubber safety surface. This successful school / community playground was completed on a relatively low budget.
